Do you ever wonder what happens to all the losing team’s championship shirts after the championship is over? Do they simply get destroyed or go towards another cause? No matter what the sport is, thousands of shirts are printed off for both teams in the event that they are the winning team. These shirts must be pre-printed so that they can be in stores in time for the next business day so that fans can go out and get the newest apparel celebrating their team’s victory. Little thought, however, is placed to where the losing team’s apparel goes.
Thanks to a foundation called World Vision, the losing team’s apparel is put to a good cause. World Vision partners with over 100 countries worldwide to send these shirts, hats, and other goods to countries whose citizens are poverty stricken. Generally, within the week after the championship game is played, the shirts arrive at their destinations around the world. This is a great contribution to these countries, because some of the citizens may not be able to buy clothing for their families.
According to AOLnews.com, World Vision is able to do all of this for one reason, only shirts of the winning team are allowed to be sold in stores. All of the major sports associations in the United States strictly prohibit the sale of non-winning teams championship memorabilia so that fans do not walk around wearing contradictory shirts. This strict rule has allowed for World Vision to accumulate the extra clothing and allow them to provide the service that they do for the rest of the world. Just remember that even though your sports team may not have won in the United States, someone else in the world believes that they won the championship.
