Indiana became the 23rd “Right to Work” state last Wed., after the senate passed the bill 28-22, and Governor Mitch Daniels signed it into law. Indiana is the first right to work state in the rust belt, among states that are steel producers.

The Right to Work law prevents unions from forcing dues upon its members. This is good for a lot of non union workers in Indiana. This means that they will not have to pay into a fund that might be used for something they disagree with, like political gains. Many union workers absolutely hate it, because those workers that do not pay into the “pot” are still receiving the same benefits as those who are. It has caused a lot of quarreling among workers in the state. This last weekend was the Super Bowl, and while the festivities were happening in the capital, many were protesting the law.

This isn’t the first time the law has been brought up. Last summer, Democrats skipped out on sessions and stalled voting on the bill, but the stalling and holding out could not happen any longer, and the law was passed.
