Over the years, National Signing Day has become an unofficial holiday around college campuses nationwide. National Signing Day represents the first day that high school senior football players can sign their official letter of intent to play football at the college level. According to Yahoo Sports’ Rivals.com, perennial powerhouse Alabama snagged the nations’ top recruiting class, including three five star prospects.

However, for Purdue North Central, National Signing Day only brought disappointment. Since its’ inception in 1948, Purdue North Central has failed to land a single football recruit. The 64 year streak is a concern, especially to the alumni.

One graduate who spoke to PNN on the condition of anonymity admits “Honestly, I thought being a Cubs fan was tough but the Panthers’  football program is just heartbreaking.”  However, not everyone is as discouraged. For example, Aaron Pineda, a 2006 graduate, says “Well it only takes one Peyton Manning type recruit to get a program kick started.”

Purdue North Central’s Athletic Director John Weber was stunned to find out that a handful of local prospects spurned the Panthers. “You know, it was kind of shocking to come up empty handed. We felt like we were really close with a couple of guys. We’re not entirely sure why they decided to go a different direction, but we suspect it might have something to do with us not having a football program.”

The Panthers will look to hop back onto the recruiting trail in hopes of reenergizing a non-existent football program.
